Claudius Schulze, who lives in Brussels and Istanbul, was originally trained in Conflict Resolution. Choosing to become a photographer he has since traveled to over 40 countries, working on various photographic projects. His latest was SOCOTRA, a visual journey to the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean. He spent about 7 weeks shooting in this remote place that most people wouldn't find on a map and produced a self published book with wonderful photographs and texts that are spread over 130 pages. He presented SOCOTRA in Perpignan, London,

Brussels and Hamburg and has now a new exhibition in Berlin opening this Friday 27th, 2012, at the Aff-Atelier freier Fotografen.

HHHNY:Congratulations on your book SOCOTRA.

Photographers often seek out far and unknown places. The island

Socotra in the is in the middle of  nowhere and totally unheard of.

And dangerous to get to. How did you get interested in it ?

Claudius Schulze: I was working on a project – it was ok, but never really hooked on, as it were. Out of frustration, I cancelled it one day – and, as we say in German, “I was ready for an island”. Years ago, I read about Socotra and out of a clear blue sky I decided to go there!

HHHNY: Was it a book project from the beginning or was it a story idea for a magazine ? How was it funded ?

Claudius Schulze: Not at all. First it was just an idea for an travel story. Nothing more than that. Through the impression of the first trip and the research I did after it, I got interested in the concept “Island”, exploration and adventure. The following trips, I worked towards that idea – to not only document the very island of Socotra but also the imagined adventure island we all have in our heads.

HHHNY: We both (Andreas and Stefan) know how much work it is to produce a book, especially after the photography (the fun part) is done. What kept you going ? What problems did you encounter producing the book ? How much time went into the production of the book besides taking the pictures ?

Claudius Schulze: Oh yes, it is heck a lot of work. Yet, I enjoyed doing it very much. I designed the book myself. I learned book binding to produce dummies and the special edition. I wrote many pages. I took me a year to produce the book – a year of hard work. But not a single moment, I felt regret. I enjoyed every single part of it. I was (and am) deeply convinced by the concept of the book and really wanted to hold the final volume in my hands. Since the project is about a topic (islands) that traditionally found their medium in books – think of Robinson Crusoe, the first modern novel! – the book felt to be the perfect medium.

HHHNY: How many books did you print and what is your experience with self publishing ? Is it worth it financially ?

Claudius Schulze: The book was printed in an edition of 500. That’s not a lot – I was just too scared that if the book wouldn’t sell I would have to look every morning at the hundreds of books standing unsold in my apartment. Yet, it turned out to be a too small edition as the book is basically sold out – after just four months! Nobody makes money with publishing great photo books. Yet, I always applied a calculation that limited the risk. Actually, the risk with self-publishing was lower than if I would have went with a publisher

(I had offers) as was the amount of money I had to touch. I decided to make a special edition of the book. I pre-sold the first 100 books to a lightly higher price to ‘supporters’ of the project.

That way, I financed a big part of the printing costs. In return,

those supporters received a print with their book and are named in the book.

HHHNY: You put a lot of energy into advertising ‘Socotra’on social networks like Facebook and Twitter besides writing about it on your your website and blog. Could you imagine producing a book today without online marketing ? Is it part of the fun of self publishing ?

Claudius Schulze: It would be impossible for me to self-publish without these new channels. On the one hand, I try to cut out ‘traditional’ sales channels as much as possible. Book shops take up to 50% commission – plus shipment. I loose 75ct with each book sold through main stream book shops (the picture is different with art and photography bookshops). I tried to include the audience as much as possible in the making of the book. Also, I love the bi-directionality of marketing in social networks, getting feedback was very important for me. Working alone and for oneself on one project for so long made me feel like being in a vacuum. I tried to compensate the feedback of a team by the feedback I got through my blog and through facebook. It was important to me to keep the supporters and funders of the book as close to the project as possible. It was not only the money these people gave me – it is also my audience!

HHHNY: Prior to the new show in Berlin (starting Friday, January 28.) you had book signings and/or shows in Perpignan, London, Hamburg, Brussels. How did you get all these places (galleries etc?) involved ? What was your experience especially with Perpignan during the photo festival ?

Claudius Schulze: Not having any marketing budget as big publishers have, I had to find ways to get the book out that don’t cost a lot of money. I chose to have a couple of book launches in different cities. The best example is probably Perpignan during the photojournalism festival Visa pour l’image. I used the toilets of the most frequented bar – Café de la Poste – as a pop up exhibition and had a book launch on the stairs of a church. I bought wine for 60 Euro, that’s all expense I had. All other presentations happened at ‘regular’ venues: bookshops, museums, galleries. On the one hand, I tried to plug into their networks, on the other, it gave me the chance to build a direct connection with the buyers of the book. A very worthwhile experience. On all events, I sold all books I brought – I would call it a success.

HHHNY: What are the benefits for you as a photographer having published this book ? For instance, do you get more assignments ?

Claudius Schulze: A book is definitely a nice business card. Yet, it is probably not worth making a book only for the marketing effect. One should love the project!

HHHNY: The photo book market is booming. Do you have an explanation ?

Claudius Schulze: Over the last 20 years, the process of book making got revolutionised. Back then, highly trained specialist where necessary for each step of thr production of a book. Today, I can design the book myself on my laptop and print a book straight out of a pdf. That’s incredible! The technology got just so much easier to handle – which made it also cheaper. I think it would have been barely possible to selfpublish a book a couple of decades ago.

HHHNY: Can you talk about  your images, like how did you decide to include reportage elements to mostly landscape photography ?

Claudius Schulze: The Socotra project was the first time that I documented an imagined place rather than a really exisiting one. That was a very new experience for me. I realized that it is very important to capture the mood to create the right impression in the head of the spectator. In the case of adventure island, landscapes were very important for that. The process of realizing this was very important for the (slow) transformation of my work from straight-forward photojournalism to a more artistic documentary photography.

HHHNY: Have you been back to Socotra with the book ? If, what was the reaction ?

Claudius Schulze: No.

HHHNY: Last not least:  What is your next project ?

Claudius Schulze: After all the golden hour photography of Socotra, I long for the dark side of things. Apoclypse is my new project. Today, we are the edge of a new beginning, that is – apocalypse in the literal sense of the meaning of the word a new beginning rather than a disastrous end. Scrupulous exploitation of the earth’s resources, a dramatic overpopulation far beyond sustainability, and the dooming of a climate change that will alter the face of earth drastically, coincidence in what is probably the worst systematic economic crisis in our civilization’s history. It is clear that human life has to change dramatically - or it will be changed as drastically by force. We have the choice of protecting the self-sustaining ecosystem of the earth or starting to geo-engineer our own – this is descriptive rather than normative; an examination of the apocalypse we are at the beginning of. The project is about the future, mankind’s fear of chaos and uncertainty and the struggles we all fight to keep control. It’s a universal story, really. For if we don’t quest for the future, what do we really quest for? It is a multi-faceted project, looking at dooming nature catastrophes as the earth quake that might hit Istanbul in the very near future, traditional leadership models that can withstand drastic social changes such as tribal leaders, village elders, sheikhs, and the like, or architecture that is designed to last for centuries. Examining what will be lost and what can remain is my story. I intend to reach past the comfort zone, asking questions about consequences, destiny, and the possibilities of a new beginning.

Inside - Outside by train

During the last half year I spend a lot of time in trains. Sometimes on my way for an assignment or a lecture at the university of Halle. While sitting in the train I have to take pictures. Occupy Wall Street protester in an otherwise totally empty because blocked by police Zuccotti Park, some nature on Broadway, a newly occupied Wall Street (by the police), a ship owned by the 1% in front of the buildings where they manage their money, a woman with scarf crossing Broadway. And then I had a real great pizza at Steve's Pizza on Trinity Place ...

Evening at the countryside

Dear Stefan, sorry for my late answer, but I was too bussy with all my work about the book, updates for my website, meetings with clients and so on. I leave the city for a few days to make some photoshop work in our datscha at the countryside. People here are decorating their houses in a very strange way for the christmas time. During the next days I will take some more pictures about this phenomenon. How are your first steps in NY after such a long time in Europe?

Impressiv Moments Of Making a Photobook - Part I.

Dear Stefan, during the last week I did the preprint process for the new Moscow book. Here a snapshot from the first proofs - made at the analog & digital lab from my friend Andreas Doria. It is allways a really impressiv moment to see the images in this high quality. I think this book will be the last made by analog negatives. So it is also a little farewell ... All in all it is an interesting and intensiv process. After hours discusting colours (more yellow! less cyan! more contrast!!!) I set at night in front of the TV and start thinking about the cromaticity of the fim....
For this reasons I was not able to take some new photos for our blog. Today I start for a short trip to Switzerland, perhaps I will have some new pix on monday. You will see...

I liked your last PDF a lot, and what a great way to present it (via iSSUU). 

I went to the opening at fotodoks, a young documentary photography festival in Munich. Our friend Joerg Glaescher (above) was present with images from his long term project about German soldiers "Tod Kommt Spaeter, Vielleicht", a soon to be book by Kehrer Verlag. Michael Wolf's Tokyo subway series (below)was also part of the official program. Since both photographers are represented by laif (like us) it was no surprise that I met laif CEO Peter Bitzer at the opening. It was a fun night, more info about the festival here:

Shooting with a Sound Blimp

Hi Andreas,

as you know I am currently working as the stills photographer (or 'set photographer', or 'unit photographer') for the German movie production "Ludwig II" in Bavaria, Germany. I usually shoot stills for one big movie production every year. I like this kind of work for many reasons, one being the continuous employment for a few month, 4 in this case. The chance to take great pictures with great acting talents and DPs (or DOP, director of photography) is another one. Our DP is Christian Berger who has been nominated for an Oscar for his camera work for "White Ribbon". He also developed his own movie light system, more on that here in a later post.

I shot stills for about 20 movie productions over the years but never used a sound blimp. I hated it. The weight, the look (yes, the look), the 'not being in touch with my camera', the complicated way of working with this monster.

Well, I am finally growing up. I ordered a sound blimp from the only real source, Mark Jacobson in California. First I got one with a tube for the Nikkor 28-70 2.8 and it took only a few days until I ordered another tube (in picture above) for the Nikkor 70-200 2.8, and my life on set changed forever. It is pure joy to click away while the filming of a scene is going on, not having to wait for another and yet another take to have the actors pose for my shot. Which I still do at times when necessary. The weight of the blimp is a problem, so is the handling of my camera. Every time I want to reset the focus point (the blimp is connected to the camera via cable and has two buttons, one for auto focus, one for shutter release) or change the shutter speed and/or f-stop I have to open the blimp. But after a few weeks working with it now I am very quick with that and it doesn't bother me anymore, the rewards are bigger than the problems. The obvious downside of not having a blimp are: No shooting during filming of the movie because of  the shutter/mirror noise my Nikons make. And boy, these Nikons are  noisy. Canons are quiet like a mouse in comparison !! Are you listening  Nikon ? Hello ? But hey, I am a Nikon man and nothing will change that.  Not now anyway.

My blimp version holds either one of my cameras, the D700 or the D3. I choose the D700 because of the weight and it is a little less noisy than the D3 to beginn with.

I wish I could show you some of the pictures I am taking, but they are not released for publication yet. We will have to be patient until the movie will be released by Warner Bros next year.

Dear Stefan, it was a full weekend with photos, photos, books, photos.....and photographers. I one district of Hamburg more than 10 galleries arrange their openings at Friday night. At the same time the "Photobook + Art Fair Hamburg" opens the doors with a lot of publishers, bookstors, selfpublishing plattforms etc. I didnt get the chance to visit all, but here you will get some spots.

The image on top is taken in the Flo Peters Gallery, with the work from Sinje Dillenkofer. The work is titeled with "Cases" and means the cases where old technical instruments were stored.

"Last  year, Patti Smith, icon of the punk rock movement, poet and visual  artist, published her memoir “Just Kids”. In an empathetic yet  unsentimental manner, she writes about how she came to New York to get a  fresh start as an artist in the seventies and above all describes her  innocently tender yet ambivalent relationship with the photographer  Robert Mapplethorpe. The book soon became a literary sensation, bringing  Smith the National Book Award.
The iconic pictures in the book were provided by Judy Linn.  As a close friend of Smith and Mapplethorpe, the New York photographer  had captured the atmosphere of those early days in intimate photo  sessions: Patti in a petticoat, cool with a cigarette, in bed with  Robert… With her work series “Patti Smith – 1969 to 1976”, she leads us  straight into the perfectly bohemian life at the Chelsea Hotel, before  punk and new wave came up."

"In the spirit of this heading paraphrasing a fundamental text of photographic modernity by the well known German philosopher Walter Benjamin, I am working on creating a monography of images articulated around the decline of silver-gelatin photography, taking as my object the obsolescence of the darkroom.
As an agent in and witness of a pivotal moment in the history of art and technologies, squeezed between the dual procedures of analogical and digital recording, I find the utmost importance to invest the iconicity of the darkroom with the connotations of ruin and post-industrial debris." from the photographers website.

Hello Newyork!(HHHNY) hatte die Chance uns mit der deutschen Fotografin Katharina Hesse, die in China lebt, über ihre Situation als Fotografin dort und ihr neuestes Projekt zu unterhalten. Zusammen mit der Autorin Lara Day hat sie während der letzten drei Jahre ein Buchprojekt über Sexworkerinnen in Bangkog realisiert:"Human Negotiations". Um das Buch dann auch finanziell realisieren zu können, entschlossen sich die beiden 8.000 Dollar über die Crowdfounding Plattform "Kickstarter" zu organisieren. Es hat geklappt und wurde vom "Three Shadows Photography Art Center" publiziert. In Deutschland ist es über www.schaden.com zu beziehen.

"Human Negotiations is not a journalistic account of the sex trade, but instead a personal interpretation of a line of work that is frequently misunderstood. Leaving aside stereotypes of exploited, downtrodden Third World females coerced into a profession in which they are passive victims, the project reveals a more nuanced, open-ended world where women take center stage, and where reality's complexities leave room for wider interpretations." HHHNY: You are now based in China. What was the reason for you to leave Germany in this direction?

Katharina Hesse: My background actually is Sinology (Chinese studies). The original plan was to spend one year doing research for a graduate degree at Beijing university in the early nineties. Without this background, I doubt I ‘d stayed on for such a long time. 

HHHNY: You just finished your project "Human Negotiations" about sex workers in Bangkok together with writer Lara Day. To get the money to publish this project as a book you decided to do a crowd founding with "kickstarter". What is your experience with Kickstarter ? How much (social net-) work (-ing) was involved to make the project happen ?

Katharina Hesse: There was a lot of additional work necessary. Just posting a project on KS is not enough as we realized pretty quickly. If there’s no action from backers, you drop down the list on kickstarter. We became aware of this when for one week, Lara and I both happened to be traveling on assignment and had no time to think much about the campaign.
Towards the end of the campaign we spent almost every night on the phone discussing content for UPDATES to catch up. In addition we sent out  mass e-mails to colleagues, friends and whoever we thought could be interested in the project. It felt uncomfortable to be so public on the internet, but it had to be done.

HHHNY: Would it not have been easier to earn the money with other photo assignment and invest into this book project?

Katharina Hesse: The entire project except for the printing is self-funded with our personal savings ( travels over a period of more than 3 years to Bangkok, hotels, fixer etc). 
The printing costs are shared between the publisher and us . So the money Lara and I raised on KS is partial funding. We also raised additional funds through private print sales.

HHHNY: You work on photo assignments in Asia besides your personal projects. Do you have also Asian clients? 

Katharina Hesse: I have few Asian clients which actually is a pity. But apart from Japanese publications, there's simply no budget for magazines to pay acceptable fees to editorial photographers ( as far as I know) . This may be a reason why in China for example, you 'll find many talented ( Chinese) photographers  who rather work in advertising to make a living. 

On the few occasions I have been out with Chinese writers on assignments though , it's been a good experience. There's a natural acceptance/ closeness between subject and media that you usually don't experience when being on assignment for Western publications. It's also nice to actually meet the photo editor you work with:)

HHHNY: Is it difficult to financially survive in China (a question from New York, ha), do you fully live from your photography ?

Katharina Hesse: In the nineties when I first started out, you could survive on 400-500 US$/ month. Those days a long gone. Nowadays, we live in the post- financial crisis days (and more specific to China : post-Olympic days with inflation). As a Westerner in China working for mostly Western media, it's become definitely more difficult and you need to adapt. Corporate clients fill the gaps now left behind by editorial. Yes, I live fully on my photography.

HHHNY: What is the situation for female photographers in China?

Katharina Hesse:Given the size of the country, it’s a bit difficult to make a general assessment. You see women names’ in all kind of “genres”, incl. entertainment photography, art and documentary. When you take a look at the annual exhibition for photography graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts for example  (hosted by the Three Shadows Art Photography Centre), you 'll notice quite a few women’s names.  Where all these people end up years later ? Maybe in the same positions as women in Western countries ? As photo editors, some become professional photographers (in the old sense that you make a living on it), some choose other professions. In fact, why should China be different ? 

HHHNY: Whats your next project ? Any plans ?

Katharina Hesse: Yes ! But since I even haven't started, better don't talk about it :)

A question I would find really interesting is: why do so few German photographers base themselves overseas ?

Colours at the countryside

Lieber Stefan, als ich die Bilder machte, versank hier noch nicht alles im Regen und hier at the countryside gabs mal wieder was zu feiern. Ich bin sehr froh, dass es hier im Alltag doch diese fantastischen Farben gibt, die echte Farbfotografie zuläßt und nicht nur Farbgeknipse. 

Der Sportplatz hier auf dem Dorf ist kein Schmuckstück, aber es gibt einen. Wir haben ihn für uns eingeweiht, allerdings fehlt der Ball nicht nur auf dem Bild.

Hier noch so ein schönes Beispiel für die ländliche Farbwelt am späteren Abend ... . Langsam muß ich mich mal an ein gründliches Editing machen. Aber i.M. kümmere ich mich erstmal um das kommende Moskau Buch. Siehe älteren Post hier.

So, oder so ähnlich wird es dann auch für dich in Bavaria an dem einen oder anderen Abend aussehen, danach kannst du dann NY wieder so richtig genießen. Bye Bye New York - Hello Munich

Andreas, I will arrive in Munich on Friday to shoot film stills in Bavaria and Austria for the next 4 month. A great job, the movie is about the live of Ludwig II, directed by Peter Sehr and Marie Noelle. My only problem is leaving New York !! Well, can't have it all, and I am not complaining, believe me. I shot the pictures above on the now almost finished "High Line" in Manhattan, the spectacular park on the old elevated train tracks that run from 14th street up to 34th street. The creators of that park deserve every award that there is for their work and vision. They literally added a whole new level to New York, 20 blocks long.

By the way, I love your new work from Neuruppin ! I hope we'll meet somewhere in Germany, maybe in Neuruppin ??

Dear Stefan, I just start to take pictures in Neuruppin for a new exhibitionproject, which deals with the subject of "Tolerance". Probable the titel will be "Normal Is Different". I got this assignment from the "Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Brandenburg" and at the beginning of September, 8 images in large format will be exhibited at a central place in the middle of the town Neuruppin. This weekend a small group of 150 Neonazis entered the city to do a march. On the half way the demonstration had to stopp - the road was blocked with people, who are fighting against racism and neonazis.... .

Hi Andreas, sorry for not posting photos lately. Fortunately the reason is work, this year was pretty busy so far. I am often surprised how different photography assignments can be, from album cover to interior design to editorial stories to movie stills to movie poster, all happened this month. I finished shooting stills and poster for film director Fro Rojas (iPhone photo above), yesterday we spent the bright sunny day inside a night club in Washington Heights ... as always I cannot show 'real' images from the set until they are approved by the film's production company and the movie comes out ...

Bejing based photographer Katharina Hesse directed us to a very interesting blog about street photography in Asia: The Invisible Photographer Asia (IPA) is a collective of five photographers who share a passion for street photography and photo journalism. It was founded by Kevin WY Lee (Singapore) about a year ago. The goal is to strengthen the presence of Asian photojournalism online with a website and the blog "Invisible Photographer Asia". Here an interview with founder Kevin WY Lee ...

What was the idea behind creating this platform?

Invisible Photographer Asia was first started merely out of personal interest and a personal need to collect. There is a lot of great work in Asia by unknown and upcoming photographers, but there didn't seem to be a strong Asia-wide platform that featured them. The name Invisible Photographer Asia was first coined to represent the method/style of street and documentary photography that I subscribe to i.e. the photographer being a non-influencing 'invisible' observer. The name now also represents our aim to bring visibility to emerging/established photographers and their work.

Is Asian street photography special and/or different compared to others, and if, how do you think it differs from others?

Asian street photographers approach their photographs in the same spirit. Their methods and sensibilities may differ though. Asians tend to be more reserved in a social encounters. They also have different cultural references and aesthetic tastes. When out in the streets, Asian geography and social behavior are different too affecting the final photographs themselves. Asia is a large continent, so there will be differences within too. Street photography was founded in the west, so I have to admit that there is currently more diversity and maturity in the west compared to Asia. 

What is the difference for you between todays street photography  and that of the 50s or 60s?

Old, classic street photography were generally more formal, obvious and structured. Nowadays, you see less formality, more layered compositions, impressions and mood photographs. More humor and wit too. Oh yes, and color - vivid color.

Many photographers in Europe and the US complain about shrinking photography fees and the end of photojournalism. How is the situation of working photographers in Asia?

The situation is the same in Asia, and dare I say probably worst as the jobs with good budgets might still go to the 'name' western photographer. Hopefully, this will change as more talented Asian photographers emerge, be known and be commissioned for their local eyes.

It is said that most European and American publications often send their own photographers for major stories and use local photographers only as stringers or assistants. Do you think that is true if, why?

Yes, as mentioned in the previous answer. These publications have European and American audiences so the editors feel better sending their own photographer because they feel they are hiring eyes with the same cultural and aesthetic values as them and the audience. They feel they will get 'right' pictures from their own photographers. But hopefully the definition of right will evolve, and I believe it is.

Is street photography political or a political tool for you? If it is, how is it political and if not, why is it not?

Street Photography is not political to me. I feel that something is political only if you set out to do it with political intentions. My intentions are not political. Street photography to me is observation photography. Certain photographs may hint at political ideology but that is never intentional. I have never heard a street photographer say his photography was political.

Fuji Finepix X 100 vs iPhone

Andreas, now you are making me very jealous !! I want my Fuji too !! Talk to your Fuji people (just kidding)... Needless to say, there is no comparison between the two. The iPhone camera is a great and fun tool to create images whenever and wherever, but I only use it in connection with an app (shakeitphoto) or as a visual notebook. Shooting and composing with a phone is also very different for me than shooting with a camera. I bought the Canon G10 a few years ago in order to have a small camera on me at all times and it worked very well for my umbrella series but I never really shot anything else with it, partly because it's quality isn't very good in low light and the shutter lag is still annoying (even worse with phone). I hope the Finepix is what I expect from it and I will definitely get one asap. According to you the quality of the photo files is very promising. Hope we can soon photo-battle back and forth with identical cameras !!

iPhone vs. Fuji Finepix X 100

Dear Stefan, I got it: Fuji Finepix 100 ! I think its the best small digital camera  I ever had. Es wird nun mein "kleines Schwarzes" werden, welches ich immer dabei habe. Das große non plus Ultra ist, dass man nun jederzeit rumknipsen kann, aber die Bilder sind in einer technischen Qualität, mit der man auch später etwas anfangen kann und nicht nur bei Facebook etc hochladen darf, weil da die Auflösung eh sehr gering ist. Gestern war ich in Neuruppin, Brandenburg, und auf dem Weg nach Hause kam ich in ein schweres Gewitter, da konnt ich dann nicht wiederstehen und habe ein wenig die neue Kamera ausprobiert.

Insgesamt ist die Bedienung etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber die meisten Funktionen erschließen sich intuitiv. Für dich könnte sie auch interessant sein, da sie wirklich sehr leise ist und bei deinen Aufnahmen am Filmset könnte das hilfreich sein.

Dear Stefan, wir hier in Europa brauchen immer etwas länger, als ihr in den Staaten, aber auch hier fangen die Leute an sich mit dem sogenannten Crowdfounding zu beschäftigen - so auch ich selber. Dabei bin ich auf verschiedene interessante Fotoprojekte gestoßen. Eines welches mir gut gefällt ist "The Black Garden Project" von Jason Eskenazi.

Ein anderes sehr interessantes Projekt ist: "Human Negotiations" von Katarina Hesse und Lara Day. Ein Photoprojekt mit Texten, welches uns die Welt der SexarbeiterInnen in Bangkok erklärt. Ich kenne bislang nur Bilder, die sich aber auf angenehme Weise von Klischees fernhalten und ein gutes Beispiel für eine Reportagefotografie sind, die mir eben nicht irgendetwas zeigt, sondern mir die Möglichkeit eröffnet etwas sehen zu können.

Auf Kickstarter wird das gesamte Projekt beschrieben und ein gut gemachter Videoclip erklärt, um was es geht und wofür das Geld (8.000 Dollar) benötigt wird. Je nach Höhe der "Spende" gibt es dann etwas zurück. Also ansehen und den Backers-Button drücken.

Lieber Stefan, das sieht ja alles sehr gut aus, was du über das NY-Photofestival gepostet hast. Ich war am Wochenende auf dem Lande - also dem Gegenteil von NY. Unsere Nachbarn dort haben Nachwuchs bekommen und das wird in Norddeutschland mit einer sogenannten Pullerparty gefeiert. Dabei wird viel getrunken, was angeblich dem Kind beim Pinkeln helfen soll .... . Letztlich ist es ein Anlass sich zu sehen und viel (Alkohol) zu trinken... .

New York Photo Festival 2011 - I

Hi Andreas, here is my first impression from the New York Photo Festival 2011. The festival is curated this year by Enrico Bossi and Elisabeth Biondi.

Matt Eich, a founding member of LUCEO, gave a great presentation of his long-term projects at St. Anns Warehouse tonight as part of the New York Photo Festival's lecture series. He is one of my favorite young and emerging* photographers, his project 'Baptist Town' is amazing, he really takes you there. Which is what documentary photography should be about.

I wonder why only roughly 50 people showed up for this one hour lecture, on a Friday night at 7pm in New York City... Matt deserved a full house.

Dear Andreas, maybe this one is more "Stefan" ... shot just a few days ago in my neighborhood Williamsburg/Brooklyn. But you are right, I need to edit better and show less ... 

I think the instant availability of images and instant publishing  leads to a lot of unthoughtful presentations all around these days (including by myself). But it also has the advantage that one can put out some photography work quickly and see how it works ...  maybe the project ("One Day", Kehrer Verlag) you were talking about in your last post should have gone through an online test run ... most of those photos tell me absolutely nothing, but I guess I had to see the whole book case in order to judge it for myself.

The New York Photo Festival 2011 starts tonight and I will be there as much as possible and you'll hear about it right here. It is curated by ENRICO BOSSAN and ELISABETH BIONDI this year, should be very interesting ...

One Day - is not enough

Lieber Stefan, neidvoll nehme ich immer wieder deine schönen iPhonepix wahr, aber irgendwie müßte man darüber nochmal nachdenken - finde ich. Auf die lange Strecke fehlt mir das Konzept oder anders gesprochen: der Gedanke dabei. Die Serie könnte sonst Gefahr laufen beliebig zu werden und damit langweilig. Mir fehlt der Stefan in den Bildern.

So ich hoffe du bist nicht "not amused" von meinen Gedanken, die eher als Anregung, denn als Kritik zu werten sind.

Vor zwei Wochen brachte mir mein Freund Jörg Gläscher das Kompendium "One Day" (Kehrer Verlag) mit - leider nur zum Anschauen. Es ist ein Schuber mit 10 schmalen Bändchen mit Bildern von 10 FotografInnen, die alle am 21. Juni 2010 (Sonnenwende)einen Tag fotografiert haben. Iniziiert hatte dieses Projekt der Fotograf Harvey Benge. Nun habe ich es mir angesehen und war etwas hilflos, was das ganze anbelangt. Es sind zwar schmucke Namen dabei, wie Rob Hornstra, Todd Hido, Alex Soth, Jessica Backhaus, um nur ein paar zu nennen, ABER irgendwie wurde man das Gefühl nicht los, da haben welche am 21. Juni vor einem Jahr schlicht rumgeknipst. Gestern nun erschien von Laura Weissmüller in der Süddeutschen Zeitung eine Kritik. Und - diese sprach mir aus der Seele. Grundsätzlich ist das ganze wirklich sehr schön gemacht (dies Lob geht an den Kehrer Verlag), nur es fehlt leider irgendwie das Thema. Ein Tag reicht eben nicht.

Dear Stefan, it is a sad day: the photographer Tim Hetherington died yesterday in Libya. His colleague Chris Hondros died also. Die Website der New York Times hat eine Zusammenstellung der besten Bilder von Chris Hondros veröffentlicht.
Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich noch den Film von Tim Hetherington "Restrepo", der auf der Hamburger Phototriennale gezeigt wurde, empfohlen. Hier ein anderes Video von ihm, welches er vor drei Monaten veröffentlichte.

Er schrieb dazu: " 'Diary' is a highly personal and experimental film that expresses the subjective experience of my work, and was made as an attempt to locate myself after ten years of reporting. It's a kaleidoscope of images that link our western reality to the seemingly distant worlds we see in the media."

Dear Stefan, das Photo kvon der Bushaltestelle könnte ja glatt von mir sein ... der ja ständig Füße fotografiert. Sehr schön !

Seit heute haben wir nun zu der Homepage von INAMILLIONYEARS.COM auch einen Blog und starten damit eine neue Campagne unter dem Titel "I Remember Chernobyl". Menschen aus aller Welt erinnern sich in kurzen Videostatements an die Tage nach dem Reaktorunglück in Tschernobyl. Zu sehen sind jetzt schon u.a. Nina Hagen, Jürgen Trittin, Ali Samadi Ahadi und Leonid Korzh einer der Menschen, die heute Liquidatoren genannt werden und damals in Tschernobyl ihr Leben und ihre Gesundheit aufs Spiel gesetzt haben. Alle die noch Erinnerungen an damals haben, sind aufgefordert sich bei uns zu melden und ihren Beitrag hochzuladen. Es ist sehr einfach. Folge diesem Link, hier wird alles erklärt.

Hier ein Auszug aus der Presseerklärung:

"Gleichzeitig haben wir eine neue Aktion gestartet: „I Remember  Chernobyl“. Hier werden Menschen aus allen Teilen der Welt in kurzen ein  bis zweiminütigen Videostatements ihre persönlichen Erinnerungen an die  Tage nach der Reaktorkatastrophe in Tschernobyl veröffentlichen. Nach  dem Unglück am 26. April 1986 gab es ähnlich zu den Geschehnissen heute  in Fukushima, Japan,  eine große Verunsicherung, da nur wenige  Informationen an die Öffentlichkeit gelangten - oftmals erst nach Tagen  wurden zurückliegende Ereignisse und deren Gefahren für die Bevölkerung  bekannt. Dear Stefan, diese Woche finden in Deutschland sehr viele Veranstalltungen statt, die an das Reaktorunglück in Tschernobyl vor 25 Jahren erinnern - und vorallem auch an die Folgen. Durch die Kernschmelze in Fukushima haben die Folgen dieser Katastrophe vor 25 Jahren wieder enorme Aktualität bekommen. Aus der Flut an Veranstalltungen will ich dich und unsere LeserInnen auf eine Ausstellung im Willy-Brand-Haus in Berlin hinweisen. 

"25 Jahre des Vergessens, des Ignorierens, des Verschweigens und  offizieller Fehlmeldungen kennzeichnen den Umgang mit dem bis dahin  größten Atomunfall der Geschichte, der Explosion des Atomkraftwerks  Tschernobyl am 26. April 1986. Seit dem 11. März 2011 droht in Japan ein  nukleares Inferno noch größeren Ausmaßes.
Was sind die Folgen eines nuklearen Unfalls? Der Fotograf Rüdiger  Lubricht holt die Reaktorkatastrophe in Tschernobyl aus der sicheren  Entfernung und zeigt in der Ausstellung "Tschernobyl: Verlorene Orte,  gebrochene Biografien" Momente aus der Wirklichkeit vor Ort: die  verstrahlten Lebensräume in der Sperr- und Todeszone; die Rückkehrer,  die trotz der Strahlengefahr in die Zone zurückkamen, um dort ihren  Lebensabend zu beschließen; die Liquidatoren, die damals stolz darauf  waren, für ihr Land und ihre Mitmenschen zu arbeiten und sich  nachträglich die Frage nach dem Sinn ihres Einsatzes stellen."

Dear Stefan, how you doing? I am fine so far. Now in Germany springtime starts and all the people are more relaxed, that makes life easier. This week I started my second shooting for my serie about nuclear power plants in Gundremmingen... Anhand der politischen Diskussion in Deutschland kam mir erst jetzt der Gedanke, dass das Thema "AKWs" ein geschlossenes Sammelgebiet ist, also so schnell werden wohl keine neuen dazu kommen - zumindest in Deutschland. Alle reden jetzt im Moment über "German Angst", dabei ist aber vielen vermutlich nicht klar, woher die Sensibilität gegenüber diesem Thema herkommt. Es gab ja eine Zeit vor dem Mauerfall, da war Deutschland - zumindest gedacht - immernoch ein potenzielles Schlachtfeld des Kalten Krieges. In Deutschland gab es sehr heftige Proteste nicht nur gegen AKWs sondern auch gegen die Stationierung amerikanischer (atomarer) Mittelstreckenraketen. Diese Proteste der Friedenbewegung hatten durchaus Schnittstellen zur Anti-AKW Bewegung. Und so gesehen haben sich die beiden Bewegungen durchaus selbst verstärkt. Ich denke darin liegt ein Teil der Gründe für die hohe Sensibilität gegenüber der Nutzung von Atomenergie. Hier nun einige Bilder aus der neuen Serie.

Lieber Stefan, vor wenigen Tagen eröffnete die Triennale der Photographie in den Hamburger Deichtorhallen. Leider ist das Programm in den Deichtorhallen nicht sonderlich orginell oder gar gut. Hier findest du einige andere Tips für Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen, die ich für die Website der Zeitschrift ART herausgesucht habe (neben einigen anderen AutorInnen). Insgesamt kann man sagen ein durchaus ambitioniertes Programm, mit sehr vielen kleinen und interessanten Veranstaltungen zum Thema "Foto - Film - Foto".

Du wirst dich fragen, was die Haarpracht soll? Und von wem diese ist?

Da die kleine Ausstellung "The Twins. A visual journey by Gisela Getty & Jutta Winkelmann" auch eröffnet wurde, war auch Rainer Langhans - ehemaliger Insasse der Kommune I. und des Dschungelcamps - anwesend. Die Ausstellung zeigt in mehr oder weniger guten Familienfotos das Leben der beiden Frauen im Umfeld des amerikanischen Pop und Jetsets.

Zum Schluss gab es noch eine recht langweilige Party auf der sich dann auch Karl-Heinz Schwensen - politisch vollkommen unkorrekt auch "Neger Kalle" genannt - blicken ließ. Er ist eine ehemalige Größe aus dem Hamburger Rotlicht Milieu. Vielleicht war er wegen der Ausstellung "Traummänner" gekommen, die während der Triennale auch in den Deichtorhallen gezeigt wird.

Fukushima - Stop Nuclear Power

Dear Stefan, gerade eben noch habe ich meine Serie über die deutschen Atomkraftwerke begonnen, dann so etwas: Reaktorschmelze in Fukushima. Der Reaktor, den ich in Deutschland als erstes besuchte, ist auch ein Siedewasserreaktor aus den 70er Jahren. Als ich dort war - im Atomkraftwerk Krümmel - erfuhr ich auch, dass früher auf diesem Gelände die Munitions- und Pulverfabrik der Firma Nobel war. Nachdem die Fabrik im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört wurde, wollte man dort nicht wieder so etwas Explosives aufbauen. Statt desssen baute man in den 70er Jahren dort ein Atomkraftwerk ... welche Ironie !

Das Bild hier zeigt die Anordnung der Brennstäbe bzw. der Motoren der Brennstäbe als ein Schema in der Schaltzentrale des Atomkraftwerkes. Ich hoffe, dass nun endlich auch bei den technikgläubigen, verborten Politikern ein Umdenken beginnt. Allerdings hat die Merkelregierung ja erst unlängst die Verlängerung der Laufzeiten der deutschen Atomkraftwerke um mindestens 10 Jahre beschlossen.  

Interessanter Weise haben sich die Zugriffszahlen auf die Homepage von www.inamillionyears.com seit gestern verdoppelt. 

Ich hoffe es geht dir gut und grüße dich zur Zeit aus Norditalien, wo ich eigentlich eine ruhige Woche in den Bergen mit Skifahren verbringe. Auf bald !

Atom Heart Mother *

Dear Stefan ! I did'nt get the chance to do this kind of funny job. Ich war dafür letzte Woche im Kernkraftwerk "Krümmel", welches im Moment nicht in Betrieb ist, da dort vor einiger Zeit 2 Transformatoren gebrannt haben. Seit wir letztes Jahr das Projekt "www.inamillionyears.com" gemacht haben, denke ich oft darüber nach, wie man dieses Projekt fotografisch fortführen könnte. Nun habe ich die Chance: ich werde in der kommenden Zeit die Atomkraftwerke in Deutschland für den SPIEGEL fotografieren. Hier im Bild eine Dekontaminations Station, wo ein Arbeiter im Schutzanzug Dinge, die mit Radioaktivität kontaminiert wurden, gereinigt werden. Insgesamt ist es sehr aufwendig, da die Sicherheitsbestimmungen das Arbeiten recht umständlich machen, man hat jede Menge Papierkram .... . Aber das hat man ja schließlich immer. Dear Stefan, I hope this post will find you well. Gestern wurde ich zu einem Vortrag eingeladen, um über meine Multimedia Arbeiten zu sprechen, die ich zusammen mit Lukas Thiele entwickle und realisiere. Daher habe ich heute nochmal eine kleien Recherche gemacht und bin dabei auf einen nicht ganz neuen, aber dafür um so spannenderen Beitrag gestoßen "Where Beauty Softens Your Grief" von Gianni Cipriano. Es geht dabei um einen wohl in NY recht bekannten Bestatter, der in Harlem sitzt.Der Film hier im Blog enthält ein Interview mit Gianni Cipriano. 

Zudem entspricht die Machart genau dem, was ich mir unter einem guten "Fotofilm" vorstelle, nicht wie in so vielen Fällen, wo mit Videosequenzen eine eher schwache Geschichte und eine eher schwache Fotografie aufgewertet werden soll.

In Hamburg werden wir in gut einer Woche mal wieder Wahlen haben, aber gemäß dem alten Spruch "Wenn Wahlen etwas ändern würden, wären sie schon lange verboten", ignoriere auch ich dies weitest gehend. ABER heute sah ich einige sehr schöne Motive für meine Serie "Left Over". Diese drei Bilder sind das, was der Sturm und der Regen und einige tatkräftige Mitbürger von den Wahlversprechen (election pledge) übrig gelassen haben.

iPhone 4 - Good Camera Bad Phone

Andreas, I hate to say this since I am a big fan of Apple products. But my iPhone 4 (which I bought for the better camera compared to the older model) is the worst phone I ever had. Dropped calls, sometimes slow or no internet, no automatic email push ... but hey, great camera ! A lot of the problems may have to do with AT&T (never understood that arrangement in a 'free market' in the US and I am paying an outrageous monthly fee for it) and living in New York City, but my iPhone 3 worked better... Apple gave me a new phone last week ;-) but the problems persist. Now I am wondering, do I have to carry an iPhone to continue my iPhone photo series AND a BlackBerry or whatever to make and receive calls ... that would be really ridiculous.

Well, the good news is, they gave me a luxurious problem to complain about, keeps me from thinking about real issues ...

And good luck with the 'Moscow' book project, looks great, hope we see it here soon !

Dear Stefan, endlich ist der Dummy für meine Moskauserie fertig und es geht ans Aufräumen, dabei fiel mir folgendes iPhone Bild in die Hände bzw. ins Auge. Es ist ein Bild von der Rheinbrücke in Köln, einem schönen Baudenkmal im Stile von dem Architekten Eifel. Nun in den Zeiten der Krise schwören sich alle ewige Liebe und da diese in der Regel nicht hält, versuchen sie sich mit einem Schloss Sicherheit zu geben. Da fand ich diesen Kommentar doch sehr passend....

Wonderfull, dear Stefan. Wirklich sehr schöne Bilder, vorallem die Gummistiefel haben es mir angetan. Ich würde dir ja gerne via iPhone mit einem Bild antworten, aber als ich gegen Ende letzten Jahres (siehe Haiti Log) in Haiti war, um dort zu fotografieren, wurde ich ausgeraubt und mein ganz, ganz neues iPhone war weg ... aber vielleicht sollten wir umschwenken und fast ausschließlich iPhone-photos posten - zumindest wenn ich wieder eines habe.

I bought the iPhone 4 just because of the much better image quality and its fast shutter response versus the 3. Otherwise I was perfectly happy with the old one, I actually prefered it for its shape alone. Anyway, now I am clicking away like a maniac, a walk to the supermarket can end in dozens of photos, and the shopping delayed for another day. I have always photographed a lot, and since I went digital, a lot more, but with the mobile phone camera it has become a different story, because I am having even more fun creating images, innocent ones so to speak, no pressure attached (well, not quiet true, for the professional photographer there is always pressure to get 'the shot'). And I discovered my love for the square format, which I never liked, I needed a direction in the image, and maybe because the medium format cameras are so damn expensive ... Now I shoot for the square which I accomplish with an app called ShakeItPhoto. I love the fake polaroid effect, somehow it suits these pictures well. And developing them is almost like the good old darkroom days. Not quiet. Just almost.

Heute war mein letzter Tag in Haiti. Kurz bevor ich dann zum Flughafen gefahren bin, habe ich mir ein Quartier von Port au Prince angesehen, in dem ich vorher noch nie war: es heißt Fort National. Hier sieht man auf besonders beklemmende Weise, welche Schäden das Erdbeben am 12. Januar 2010 angerichtet hat. Hier einige Bilder von dort und noch andere Eindrücke von kurz vor meiner Abreise. Danke fürs Lesen, klicken und weitermailen. Manchmal hätte ich mir etwas mehr Feedback gewünscht, aber die Regel sagt ja, wenn nicht gemeckert wird, hats wohl gefallen.
